This article describes how to move the software and your data to another computer. This process will move the current year's data only. However, this process applies to all prior year versions of the software as well. To view your data, you must use the software from that tax year. For example, a 2003 return may only be viewed with 2003 software.
For software used in 2002 or before, simply moving the program directory will move the software and data. Refer to the table below for the default locations of the program directory for each program.
For network installs
If you are running this software on a network, where your data is stored on a server, simply install the application to the computer of your choice using the workstation install diections.
For local installs
Follow these steps to move the software to another computer:
- Backup your data.
- Install the software to the new computer.
- Restore your data.
Refer to the program help or this knowledgebase for application specific instructions for each step listed above.
If you need to move the software, but the program is no longer accessible from the original computer you may still move the data. After installing the software to the new computer, copy and paste the original data files over the newly created data files. Then run the program; your data should be in tact.
The location of your data varies by program and year. Refer to article 10147 for a complete listing.
Note: Some Trustfile software uses an SQL database. For these products, you must stop the SQL service before copying or pasting the data files. See the related article for instructions, and then follow these steps:
- On the original computer, stop the MSSQL$TRUSTFILE service.
- Copy the mdf and ldf files.
- Restart the MSSQL$TRUSTFILE service.
- On the new computer, stop the MSSQL$TRUSTFILE service.
- Paste the mdf and ldf files.
- Restart the MSSQL$TRUSTFILE service.
