Refer to Trustfile's products page for application-specific requirements.

Are you logged in as an administrator? You must have administrative rights to install Trustfile software.

Are you receiving an error message? Note the error number and message. Search the knowledgebase for the error number, or browse to your product's installation articles.

Did you use the software in the past? If so, are you able to access the prior year software without issue? Were you ever able to access the current year software? When did the problem start? Did anything change on your system recently (i.e. a new computer, upgrade, etc.)?

Is the CD bad? Try the CD in another computer to verify it is a good CD. Or if you do not have another computer, try a different CD in your computer to verify that your CD drive is working. If you suspect you have a bad CD, contact Trustfile for instructions on downloading the software.

Did you download the complete setup file? If downloading the software, verify that you downloaded the complete setup file. The size of the file should be at least 20 MB. If you are in a network environment, your data may be backed up periodically during server backups. Contact your network administrator for more information.

This process varies by product, so note the product listing to the right to ensure you are referring to the appropriate article.

Instructions

Steps to back up the data

Open the application and select Tools > Backup Data.

Browse to a location to save the backup file.

Give the backup file a name and click Save.

Steps to restore the data from a backup file

Open the application and select Tools > Restore Data.

Browse to your backup file.

Click Open.

More Information

Backup files always have a file extension that references the program. For example, NJFile 2005 data creates a backup file named filename.TFNJFile2005Backup. These extensions help to locate backup files later and to distinguish among the various programs.

Note that when you restore your data from a backup, all current data is overwritten with the backup. For example, if you restore old data after transmitting new files, then your transmission history (since the backup was created) will be lost.

Backups are often used to troubleshoot issues with your data. When sending a backup to Support, you should compress the file first if possible. You can compress files using software such as Win zip. If you are running Windows XP, simply right click the file and click "Send to > Compressed (zipped) Folder."

Backups are also used when moving the software to another computer. This process will move the current year's data only. However, this process applies to all prior year versions of the software as well. To view your data, you must use the software from that tax year. For example, a 2003 return may only be viewed with 2003 software.

For software used in 2002 or before, simply moving the program directory will move the software and data. Refer to the table below for the default locations of the program directory for each program.

Instructions

For network installs

If you are running this software on a network, where your data is stored on a server, simply install the application to the computer of your choice using the workstation install diections.

For local installs

Follow these steps to move the software to another computer:

Backup your data.

Install the software to the new computer.

Restore your data.

Refer to the program help or this knowledgebase for application specific instructions for each step listed above.

More Information

If you need to move the software, but the program is no longer accessible from the original computer you may still move the data. After installing the software to the new computer, copy and paste the original data files over the newly created data files. Then run the program; your data should be in tact.

The location of your data varies by program and year. Refer to article 10147 for a complete listing.

Note: Some Trustfile software uses an SQL database. For these products, you must stop the SQL service before copying or pasting the dat
